Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

More than just distraction — we see the full picture.

What Is ADHD?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, impulse control, emotional regulation, and executive function. It’s often misunderstood as just a lack of focus — but ADHD shapes how someone processes time, plans tasks, and responds to stimulation.

At TPC, we understand ADHD across the lifespan — and how it often goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, especially in women and high-achieving individuals.

ADHD Symptoms

Inattention

  • Trouble starting or finishing tasks
  • Losing things, missing deadlines, poor time sense
  • Seeming “spacey” or forgetful

Hyperactivity & Impulsivity

  • Restlessness, fidgeting, difficulty sitting still
  • Blurting things out or interrupting
  • Impulsive decisions or purchases

Executive Function Challenges

  • Disorganized thinking
  • Struggling to prioritize or follow multi-step tasks
  • Emotional outbursts or “shutdowns” under pressure

How ADHD Looks in Different Populations

Children

  • Fidgeting, difficulty following directions
  • Daydreaming or acting out in school
  • Poor handwriting, messy desks, forgetfulness

Teens

  • Academic struggles despite intelligence
  • Emotional reactivity, difficulty with friendships
  • Sleep disruption, screen time struggles

Adults

  • Chronic lateness, burnout, difficulty “adulting”
  • Job changes, relationship strain
  • Often misdiagnosed as anxiety, depression, or bipolar

Women

  • “High-functioning” masking of symptoms
  • Emotional dysregulation mistaken for mood disorder
  • Overwhelm, perfectionism, or rejection sensitivity

Our Treatment Approach

We offer a nuanced, neurodivergent-informed model of ADHD care:

  • Comprehensive psychiatric evaluation (we often catch missed or misdiagnosed ADHD)
  • Medication management (including stimulants and non-stimulants)
  • Therapy to build executive function skills and address self-esteem
  • Support for co-occurring conditions like anxiety, mood disorders, trauma, or autism
  • Collaboration with schools or workplaces when needed

We don’t treat ADHD like a behavioral problem — we treat the whole person.

FAQs – ADHD

  • Is ADHD overdiagnosed?
Actually, many adults — especially women and people of color — are underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed for years.
  • Can ADHD show up later in life?
ADHD is lifelong, but some people don’t recognize symptoms until demands outpace coping.
  • Is medication always needed?
Not always, but it’s often helpful. We tailor treatment to your goals and preferences.
  • Do you do testing for ADHD?
We offer comprehensive diagnostic assessments, including history, symptom checklists, and clinical interviews. Formal neuropsych testing is referred out as needed.
