Anxiety

When worry takes over, we’re here to help you regain control.

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is more than stress. It can become a chronic, overwhelming sense of fear or unease — often with no clear trigger. At The Psychiatric Center, we recognize that anxiety shows up differently for everyone. Whether it’s constant worry, panic attacks, or intrusive thoughts, we offer personalized care that helps you feel steady again.

We treat a full range of anxiety disorders, including:

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
  • Panic Disorder
  • Social Anxiety Disorder
  • Specific Phobias
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Health Anxiety
  • PTSD (see Trauma & PTSD → page)

How Anxiety Can Present Differently

Adults

Anxiety in adults often appears as:

  • Excessive worry about work, finances, or relationships
  • Trouble sleeping or constant fatigue
  • Muscle tension, headaches, or stomach issues
  • “Overthinking” or feeling constantly on edge
  • Panic attacks or sudden surges of fear

Many high-functioning adults mask their anxiety until it becomes disruptive.

Teens & Young Adults

This group may experience:

  • Academic pressure or fear of failure
  • Social withdrawal or perfectionism
  • Irritability, restlessness, or sensitivity to criticism
  • Panic-like symptoms without obvious cause
  • Avoidance of school, work, or social settings

Anxiety often blends with ADHD or depression in young adults, requiring a nuanced approach.

Perinatal & Postpartum

Anxiety during or after pregnancy may include:

  • Persistent worry about the baby’s health or safety
  • Trouble sleeping even when the baby sleeps
  • Racing thoughts or a sense of dread
  • Hypervigilance, intrusive images, or compulsive checking

We provide gentle, nonjudgmental support and can coordinate with OB/GYNs if needed.

Our Treatment Approach

We start with a clear diagnostic assessment to determine whether you’re dealing with:

  • A specific anxiety disorder
  • General life stress and overwhelm
  • Co-occurring depression or trauma
  • Physical health factors contributing to anxiety

From there, we build a plan using:

  • Psychotherapy (CBT, mindfulness-based, or trauma-informed)
  • Medication management when appropriate
  • Skills for regulating nervous system responses
  • Coordination with medical providers or support systems

We work with you — not against your anxiety — to build safety, clarity, and calm.

FAQs – Anxiety

  • Isn’t some anxiety normal?
Yes — but when it interferes with daily life or becomes chronic, it may be a disorder worth treating.
  • Will I have to take medication?
Not necessarily. We offer non-medication options and only suggest medication when it fits your goals.
  • How is anxiety different from stress?
Stress is typically situational and resolves. Anxiety can persist even when nothing is “wrong.”
  • What’s the difference between panic disorder and GAD?
Panic involves acute, episodic attacks of intense fear. GAD is a persistent, low-grade worry about many things.
